Guide: Side hustle taxes in the United States

What self-employment tax is

When you work for an employer, Social Security and Medicare taxes are split between you and the employer. When you work for yourself, you pay both halves. This is self-employment tax: 12.4% for Social Security plus 2.9% for Medicare, 15.3% in total.

It isn't charged on your whole profit. You multiply your net profit by 92.35% first, and the tax applies to that amount. If the result is under $400 for the year, you don't owe self-employment tax or need to file Schedule SE. For 2026, the Social Security part stops at $184,500 of combined wages and self-employment earnings (IRS, SSA).

Income tax is separate, and you may need to pay during the year

Self-employment tax is charged on top of regular income tax, which this calculator doesn't estimate because it depends on your total income, filing status and state. You can deduct half of your self-employment tax when working out your adjusted gross income.

No employer is withholding tax for you, so the IRS generally expects estimated tax payments during the year if you expect to owe $1,000 or more when you file (IRS estimated taxes). A simple habit: move the self-employment tax figure above into a separate account each time you're paid, plus an allowance for income tax.
