About SmartFinancesHub
Free calculators for the money questions that come with side hustles, shared rentals and freelance work.
Why this site exists
SmartFinancesHub started as an idea I couldn't stop thinking about. People pick up side hustles, move in with roommates or go freelance, and the money questions that come with it rarely have simple answers. I thought a few clear, honest calculators might help someone out there, so I built them.
My aim is simple: to give anyone who needs a dependable calculator one they can trust. That means showing every rate and where it comes from, saying plainly what each calculator leaves out, and keeping it free to use.
This is only the beginning. I'll keep adding calculators over time, and your feedback will shape what comes next. If there's a calculator you wish existed, or something here could work better for you, please get in touch. I'd love to hear from you.
Who runs this site
I run SmartFinancesHub.com on my own, as part of my personal brand, The Bottleneck Lab. It's free to use: there are no accounts, subscriptions or paid features. I plan to show ads through Google AdSense.
What the calculators do
- Side Hustle Calculator: Estimate what you keep from Fiverr, Upwork, Depop or YouTube income after platform fees, expenses and US self-employment tax or Canadian CPP contributions. 2026 rates.
- Roommate Splitter: Split rent fairly by bedroom size, share the cost of common areas and bills evenly, and see exactly what each roommate pays per month and over the lease.
- Creator Income Simulator: Estimate monthly creator or blog income from ads, sponsorships, affiliate links and product sales using your own views and rates, and see which channel earns the most.
- Runway Calculator: Find out how many months your savings last when freelance income is below your monthly costs, and how much income you need to break even.
Each calculator works for the United States and Canada. Choose your country with the switch at the top of the page, and the tax rules, currency and guide text change to match.
Where the numbers come from
Tax rates and thresholds come from the government agencies that set them: the IRS and Social Security Administration for the United States, and the Canada Revenue Agency for Canada. Platform fees come from each platform's own help or terms pages. Every rate is shown next to the calculator that uses it, with a link to its source.
The rates currently in use were last checked on September 25, 2026. If I can't confirm a figure from an official source, I leave it out rather than guess. For example, the side hustle calculator doesn't include a preset fee for rideshare driving, because those platforms don't publish a single fixed fee.
What the calculators don't cover
- Income tax. The tax estimates cover US self-employment tax and Canada Pension Plan contributions only, because income tax depends on your whole financial situation.
- Quebec. Quebec uses the Quebec Pension Plan, which has different rates, so Canadian figures apply to the other provinces and territories.
- State and provincial rules, such as state taxes or local tenancy laws.
Results are estimates for planning, not tax, legal or financial advice. I'm not a licensed financial, tax or legal professional.
Found a mistake?
Tax rules and platform fees change. If a number looks wrong or out of date, please let me know through the contact page or at smartfinanceshub@gmail.com, and I'll check it against the source.
